Plant Review – Cortaderia selloana Silver Feather
| March 21, 2011 | Posted by Andy under Latest gardening news |
Here at the Flora Select Blog, we just wanted to take a moment to show our appreciation for one of our favourite plants. Usually when people talk about plants, they are usually talking about a tree, a shrub or a perennial as these tend to feature as the highlights of the gardening scene. Every now and again however, other types of plant make it through and really show what they have got. This particularly true of Cortaderia selloana Silver Feather and we want to tell you why.
The first thing we liked about Silver Feather is that is such an easy to manage plant. Some grasses will leave you lost in a jungle of thick foliage taller than you can reach but this co-operative little Cortaderia will not grow any taller than 2m in height and would stand out rather well on its own.
Early in September, plumes of fantastic flowers emerge, reaching their peak in October and tending not to dull down or deteriorate as time goes by. With a stem that is fairly short between the foliage and the plume, Silver Feather makes for a compact yet elegant plant.
The foliage is quite spectacular, the sleek, shining silver variegation creates fantastic wave of shimmering grey and although the leaves tend to brown at the tips by the middle of summer, on the whole they can be relied upon to keep their quality well.
I am sure by now you can see why this plant caught our eye. We strongly suggest you give it a try. Check in Friday when we will be reviewing a plant chosen by you, fans of the blog. Don’t forget to tweet in with your plant requests!
