Canna you see that spectacular lily?

Many of us dream of warmer climates, of sunnier skies with still blue oceans and golden sand. Sadly though, whether because of work, family or other obligations, most of us will end up never living in such a place. We may visit and stay for a while, but eventually we all have to come back and face the daily grind. We, the writers at Flora Select don’t think this is fair, so we have come up with a way to spice up your life with a little piece of the tropics.
Look no further than Canna lilies,
Although a garden full of soft and subtle colours must be a wonderfully tranquil place to be, many of us long for that little touch a flair, a little excitement, a little je ne sais quoi. Canna lilies can do just this, like little flamenco dancers they sit flashing bright yellows, deep reds and fiery oranges at the foot or you garden as if performing some floral cabaret.
Originating in tropical and subtropical areas, these are vigorous plants which bring beds and borders alive with their brightly coloured, long-lived flowers and attractive foliage. Grown for their large, paddle shaped leaves and upright, reed-like stems which bear brightly coloured, attractive lily-like flowers from June to October.
Canna Lilies prefer to be grown with exposure to full sun in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. They look great planted in the border and work well in containers both outdoors and in cool conservatories.
They will survive outside in winter provided they are mulched thickly and planted in free draining soil. Alternatively lift and store in a frost free place over winter and plant out again in spring.
Recommended Cannas
Canna Lucifer has a bold, fiery red flower with golden-yellow edges above green foliage. A dwarf Canna, growing up to a height of 90cm, Lucifer is ideal for low beds or specimen planting in containers.
Canna Black Knight, with dramatic dark burgundy leaves and tall stalks of deep, red orchid-like flowers. Growing up to a height of 2 metres this Canna will add height and exotic appeal to any garden.
